I found an angel

Elder Holland gave an awesome talk about angels last general conference. He quoted:

“Has the day of miracles ceased?

“Or have angels ceased to appear unto the children of men? Or has he withheld the power of the Holy Ghost from them? Or will he, so long as time shall last, or the earth shall stand, or there shall be one man upon the face thereof to be saved?

“Behold I say unto you, Nay; for . . . it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men. . . .

“For behold, they are subject unto [Christ], to minister according to the word of his command, showing themselves unto them of strong faith and a firm mind in every form of godliness."

And went on to observe:

I have spoken here of heavenly help, of angels dispatched to bless us in time of need. But when we speak of those who are instruments in the hand of God, we are reminded that not all angels are from the other side of the veil. Some of them we walk with and talk with—here, now, every day. Some of them reside in our own neighborhoods. Some of them gave birth to us, and in my case, one of them consented to marry me.

Today, I met a Real Angel.

I had a playdate this morning, a playdate that I desperately needed. The kiddies had cabin fever, and I needed to dump on a good friend. (Really - what are friends for?) We got up bright and early-ish, got WiiFit and headed out the door extremely excited ... to an empty garage.

No cars.

But hey, I'm from Brazil, right? We walk. A lot. So we put plastic baggies on the feetsies, an extra sweatshirt up top, and smiles on the faces. A mile's no big deal.

Except when it's snowing.

We were about halfway there and Ouro Branco had only fallen four times. Little Prince was plugging along and only mildly complaining that he couldn't feel his toes. I closed my eyes, gritted my teeth and repeated 'ohm, you idiot, ohm' when suddenly I heard a voice from on high.

"Wanna ride?"

It was a middle-aged lady with copper hair and a blue SUV with the heat on high. She didn't look like a serial killer, and even if she had, I still probably would have hopped in.

This sweet angel's name was Coleen. She has a daughter my age and two grandchildren my children's ages. (She even had two carseats just their size!) She took me to my friend's house, waited to make sure she was home, and even offered to pick me up when we were done.

Coleen of Troy, I salute you. You were, in every way, my angel today. Thank you.

first of all, i love angels. especially ones that pick up you and your kids who are trekking on foot in bad weather.

secondly, here here, elder holland. liz (my sister) was recently the pedestrian in a car-pedestrian collision and managed to get by without any permanent damage or broken bones. a-n-g-e-l-s. that's all i have to say about that.

third of all, you rule.

A mile is a long ways when your legs are short and it's snowing. I'm so relieved Angelic Coleen and her carseats came your way!

Such a wonderful story. Thanks for sharing. I loved that talk, too, and I hope that I can be someone's angel often.

I think sometimes, that you can't look for Angels, they really do just appear right when you need them the most.
Thankfully your angel felt compelled to drive down that road at that particular time, and then stop and ask if you needed help.
Sometimes, people don't listen to all of that!
So YAY for angels!

:) I'm so glad Coleen picked you up. And glad that she wasn't a serial killer. (but I don't think serial killers have carseats in their car... unless they are planning it!)

I had a similar experience once. Maybe I'll tell it. :)

I love it! She WAS an angel! With car seats! WOW. :)

Walking totally stinks. I mean, um...er...when it's cold.

Good for Coleen! Sometimes I want to do stuff like that, but figure people will assume that I'M a serial killer. I need to do some angel practicing.

I loved Elder Holland's talk about angels! He lives right across the street from my dad, and I can't help thinking he must have observed my dad being the angel he is.

I also love that stranger-woman who gave you a lift. that happened to me once in high school, walking home in a blizzard. I was singing primary songs to take my mind off the cold and the discouragement. And somehow I summoned an angel.

But the best was when we'd just moved here from Los Angeles, and someone gave our 12-year-old son a ride home in the rain. I was horrified that he'd accepted a ride from total strangers. His response was classic: "Mom, this isn't L.A. I think they were temple workers!" (Or, angels.) :)
