I am a carnivore, hear me chew

Have you seen that "1940s wife" button floating around? If not, hi, welcome to Earth.

Okay, so I haven't actually TAKEN the quiz thingie, but I'm fairly certain I'd fail. Why, you ask? Cuz I'm sure all 1940s wives had this memorized:

I'm proud of myself that I can tell the difference between cow, pig, and chicken meat.

Now, I know the different cuts (sorta kinda.) I know that file mignon tastes good. I know that tri-tip tastes good. I like steak. I like sirloin. I like ground beef. But I couldn't tell you which part of the animal my meal came from.

And I most definitely don't know the "best" way to cook each piece.

There are women - and, let's face it, they all belong to my grandmother's generation - who can look at that cow and say, #1 - broil, #2 - saute, #3 - oven roast, #4 - good for soup, #5 - grill, #6 - pot roast, #7 baste and sear.... There are women who know the difference between panfry and panbroil.

I get to the supermarket and think, "Hmmm ... I think I'll buy some cow."

It doesn't help that I've spent most of my married life (i.e. most of my cooking life) in a foreign country. I can tell you that I really like picanha, mamminha, fraldinha, or costelas, but I couldn't tell you what they are in ENGLISH, let alone what part of the animal I'm eating.

And any meat vocabulary I've learned here is all due to this:

CHURRASCO.

Hi. My name is Becky and I break the Word of Wisdom. Eat red meat sparingly? OBVIOUSLY THE LORD HAS NEVER BEEN TO BRAZIL.

And I'll just throw this picture in of Little Prince for posterity's sake. What, don't recognize that cut of meat he's digging into?

Chicken hearts.

Pretty sure I can point to where it came from on the chart.

They did that beef labeling thing last week, on Hell's Kitchen. Super classy.

Chicken hearts? Eww.

But if he likes them, don't tell him I said that.

I am a carnivore, too. Yum! I've never had chicken hearts, but I loved cow heart when I had it. Delish! But cow stomach is nasty. And I'm not too keen on cow intestines either.

I am semi-carnivorous. I like meat, but don't like it every day. Did you ever go to Tucanos here in the states before going to Brazil? Meat-o-rama.

I used to be a white meat sort of gal... then with my last pregnancy -- I got this whole aversion to it. Now -- steak baby! All the way. MMmmmm.

But never chicken hearts... That is gross!

Ewwww he looks just like I would if I had to eat a chicken organ. NOT VERY HAPPY!

Mmmmmm, meat. Oh wait, strike that. You're pretty knowledgeable about meat if you ask me.

I've been to two different Brazilian restaurants and: Woah! Meat, meat meat! Good meat, mind you, but I could never eat more than one or two bites of any kind that was brought around.

And once I ordered some meal with "poultry" (except in Polish) and I was eating it and it was very weird and before I left I found out that it was chicken stomachs and I've never been the same since (in a bad way).

You're so funny! Yeah, pretty much I can do hamburgers and tacos. I haven't a clue what to do with the rest of it!

Heck, yeah! Bring on the cow!!

If I eat extra whole grains, that totally offsets my breaking the word of wisdom, right?

I think when you look at the cow and the numbers its like #1 - big, good for company, #18 - will scare children, all unnumbered items will make glue.

And, yay for feeding kids organ meats. Between growing up in small town midwest where everyone hunts deer, and a somewhat odd mother I have eaten most every part of an animal. The grossest was tongue...because it looked like a tonge in the frying pan. Of course, in stew I didn't mind so much.

No offense, but that whole post just give me the gag reflex!! haah! I never thought about how in the old days women might have known that stuff!!

I truly am not opposed to people liking/eating meat...but sometimes I swear I am one step away from vegetarianism... the whole idea of where meat comes from (a cow, wilber the pig, etc..)just grosses me out! =)

The hardest part of the Word of Wisdom...I think the Lord understands that different people have different definitions of the word "sparingly."

Oooo! I love beef, too. But I have no idea where on the cow it comes from either.

Maybe I should move to Brazil!

Chicken hearts...

I am THE pickiest meat eater ever!
I eat the odd piece of bacon and the odd pork sausage. I eat chicken but not turkey and I only eat chicken breast, I don't eat any fish, I like beef kinda, but I rarely eat ground beef, I like inside round even though it's tough, but it's lean.
Since working at a steak house, I know you cook your steak with the fat cap topside so the meat marbles with the juices of the fat. The more whitey marbley your steak, the more juicy tender it is when it's done.
Fillet Mignon is the most tender cut of beef, but a NY strip has more flavor...
Yup, I am slowly becoming a steak connoisseur.

On behalf of my husband I would like to say "Mmmmm. Chicken hearts."
But me? I think they are too rubbery for my taste.

Well...chicken hearts huh??...I think today...I will be able to eat meat sparingly...that sounds...WAY to foreign for me!! But...on the other hand...forget the charts. I am right there with you on the cow thing. I know what I like, and if I want it cooked right...well, that is what a chef is for....??!! Maybe, someday...I'll learn...

Corazao do frango!!! The crunchy, juicy and brown-ish/golden grilled chichen hearts are very tasty.

And brazilian-style churrasco... it's just heaven. :)

'Kay, I just love your blog (in part because I wish I would have written a lot of the same things if I'd have known about blogs five years ago when I lived in Curitiba).
Anyhow, you should know that the Brazilians cut up their cow into TOTALLY different cuts than American butchers, so your fave cuts do not HAVE a translation into your local US supermarket. Guess that takes the pressure off trying to figure it out. Also, my hubby misses chicken hearts (which I suppose I could find & cook for him, but I won't). And we went kinda vegetarian for a couple years after returning because, as good as it is, man that was a LOT of meat consumption!
